If there’s anything we’ve learned from the ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ reboot, it’s that the world can be a scary and dangerous place. The reboot has brought a fresh wave of chilling cases, each one more unsettling than the last. These are nine unnerving cases that still haunt us.
1. Patrice Endres

April 15, 2004 seemed like an ordinary day for Patrice Endres. That morning, she went to the hair salon she worked at and worked on two clients. At 11:37 am, she ended a call with a customer, and when the phone rang at 11:50 am, no one answered. She wasn’t heard from again. Her car wasn’t where she usually parked it, and her keys were still in the salon. In December 2005, Her remains were found behind a church in Dawson County, GA. To this day, no one knows who is responsible for her death.
2. Tiffany Valiante

In the summer of 2015, 18-year-old Tiffany Valiante had an argument with her mother before leaving the house on foot. Less than two hours later, she was tragically struck by a train three miles away. Authorities claimed that her death was a suicide, but her family disagrees. At the time of her death, she was missing her shirt, shorts, and shoes. An axe with red markings was found near the scene, but this item has since gone missing. Her family suspects that she was already deceased by the time she was placed on the train tracks.
3. The Park Bench Murders

On June 4, 2019, at 5 pm, two friends, Carnell Sledge and Kate Brown, decided to meet up at the Rocky River Reservation in Cleveland. To this day, no one knows why the pair decided to meet there at that time. Sledge had plans to meet with his grandmother at that time. They were found near a park bench, both fatally shot. No one in the area heard the gunshots, and to this day, no one knows who killed them or why they were shot.
4. David Carter

In 2018, a sleeping bag with something heavy inside was found in Ohio. When police looked inside, they found the lower half of a dismembered human body. At the time, 39-year-old David Carter’s family was growing concerned. They hadn’t heard from him in a few days, and they knew he and his girlfriend, Tamera “Tammy” Williams, had been going through a rough patch. When Carter’s son asked Williams where his father was, she would not tell him. When Carter’s family learned that he’d missed three days of work, they went to his apartment to look for him. That was where they found blood stains under his bed and what looked like a bullet hole in his mattress. After they filed a missing person’s report, authorities were able to determine that he was the person found in the sleeping bag. Shortly after this discovery was made, Williams fled, and police have been looking for her since.
5. Buffalo Jim

James Barrier, also known as “Buffalo Jim,” was famous for his auto-repair shop, where he sometimes worked on celebrity cars. Next to Barrier’s shop stood a strip club called Crazy Horse Too, which was owned by Rick Rizzolo, someone with whom Barrier had butted heads often. On April 5, 2008, Barrier went out to dinner with a friend, but his daughter, Jerica, became concerned when he never came home. His body was found in Motel 6, and he had a white powdery substance on his beard. His death was ruled an accident, as high levels of cocaine were found in his system. However, his daughter does not believe that her father had died from an accidental overdose. His room had been accessed with a key card minutes before he checked in, and no cocaine was found in his hotel room. According to his daughter, Jessica, he’d previously told her that if he were to be killed, they’d make it look like an overdose.
6. Joshua Guimond

On November 9, 2002, 20-year-old Joshua Guimond left his apartment with two of his friends to attend a small poker party five minutes away. He was at the party for less than an hour when he disappeared. His friends realized that he had gone missing the following day and called the authorities. Many similar cases were active at the time involving young men, alcohol, and bodies of water. Many people seemed to believe that Guimond had ended up in a lake, but he was never found. He had seemingly vanished into thin air.
7. Oslo Plaza Woman

On June 3, 1995, a hotel employee knocked on the door of a woman who had checked into the hotel three days earlier. He heard a gunshot, and fifteen minutes later, the woman was found to be deceased. Her death was ruled a suicide, but many people seem to disagree. She had checked into the hotel under the fake name “Jennifer Fairgate.” She also registered a guest who would be staying with her. She was seen with a man, but there was no evidence that anyone stayed in the hotel with her. Inside the room, they found that someone had taken a shower but found no toiletries inside. No blood was found on the hand holding the gun, and the gun’s serial number had been professionally etched off. Both keycards were still in the room, and the door had been double-bolted. Some believe that the woman was a secret agent who had been executed.
8. Lester Eubanks

In 1966, Lester Eubanks assaulted and killed a 14-year-old girl named Mary Ellen Deener. He was sentenced to life in prison, but thanks to good behavior and the relationship he had built with the guards, he was placed in a reclamation-to-society program in 1973. In this program, prisoners were allowed to go Christmas shopping unattended in a mall. Eubanks never returned from the mall and has been on the run ever since. In 2021, the US Marshals Service announced they believed Eubanks was in the Los Angeles area.
9. Alonzo Brooks

In April 2004, Alonzo Brooks and his friends went to a party about an hour’s drive from his hometown. Around 100 guests showed up at the party, and although he hardly knew any of them, he seemed to be having fun. One by one, his friends started leaving the party, including the person who was meant to give him a ride home. Brooks’s family was concerned when they realized he hadn’t come home the previous night. They called the authorities, who found his boots and hat on the side of the road. A month later, his body was found on a pile of brush by a creek. His cause and manner of death were listed as “undetermined.”
